State chateau Vranov nad Dyjí

Vranov

A castle used to stand on site of the chateau in the 11th century. It was a part of a defence line protecting the border with Austria. It was originally a seat of the lower provincial aristocracy and changed hands between many families (including the Lichtenburgs of Bítov). In 1614 the castle was bought by the Althans, who rebuilt it with architect Johann Bernard Fischer of Erlach into a fine baroque chateau. The interiors illustrate the culture of aristocratic life of the late 18th and early 19th century. The chateau is situated within the protected zone of Podyjí National Park. There is also the picturesque ruin of Nový Hrádek by Lukov.

State chateau Uherčice

Uherčice

An interesting renaissance chateau with stucco-decorated interiors and large English park. It used to be an important aristocratic seat. After 1948 it was used by the army and state farms, which caused serious damage to the structures. It is currently under reconstruction. Guided tours from June to August.

Castle Cornštejn

Cornštejn

Ruin of mid-14th century castle built by the Bítovský family of Lichtenburg. In the 16th century the castle was conquered by the troops of Jiří of Poděbrady and it lay desolate from then on. Currently it is run as a ruin by the South Moravian Museum in Znojmo. Open to public in June, July, and August.

State chateau Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou

Jaroměřice

The baroque chateau is one of the largest buildings of the first half of the 18th century in our country and in Europe. The original medieval fortress was rebuilt in the late 16th century as a renaissance chateau. It gained its baroque form under the Questenbergs between 1700 and 1737. The reconstruction project was carried out by the renowned Austrian architect J. Prandtauer. The chateau garden was rendered in the French style and established alongside the chateau reconstruction. Over the river Rokytná the garden continues as an English landscape park. The most famous personality was Jan Adam Questenberk (1678 - 1752). At his time Jaroměřice had a large library, gallery, theatre, and its own musical band. The chateau installation is a stylish reconstruction of the 19th century baroque house and interiors.
